AIPTEK. . .which model??

I am now getting excited about this little camera after seeing your pix.

Which one's are you using and recommend?

Here's what is available on line and for very good prices. . .

Mini PenCam

Pocket DV

Pocket DV 5100M

PenCam Trio

Pocket DV 3100

Pocket DV II

Pocket VD 4100M

PenCam Trio VGA

It is hard to find reviews, but a couple weren't so favorable, but the limited number of reviewers makes me question if the sample size was big enough. Not everybody appreciates the unique look of photos taken from toy cameras. . .

Which ones are you using and do you like??

FULL ECLIPSE OF THE MOON: any toy photographers catch it?

I got a few shots out on the west coast of the fabulous full
eclipse of the moon.

I actually wish I had a really excellent low light camera because
at one point, the fog started to come in off the bay where I live
and it was underlit by the town's lights so that the high fog shown
orangish in color swirling around the blood red of the moon that
had a light red halo around the deep red center at full eclipse.

It's one of the most beautiful and spooky things I have ever seen in nature
but the light was too low for my cheapy toy digital camera.

Anyone else try photographing this amazing event?

Just wanted to say quick hello to the group. My camera of choice right now is a Pentax Auto 110, having come across one late last year. I haven't started rolling or developing my own film yet, but I'm sure that's coming. As soon as I manage to get some scans done, I'll try and post a few. I do have to say, I really do love my little Pentax-even if it is an automatic :-D

Howdy toy camera enthusiasts!

Been a fan of the tribe for a while----figured it was time to finally thow some pics up. At last, here are a few from a trip to the Decordova Musuem a few years ago. You can check them under the photos column.

They are nothing special-----I had a lot of fun that day, and it was fun to look at them again a few years later. Enjoy.

Cat Cam is a fascinating use of Toy digital photogrphy equipment

This guy designed a toy camera that he put on his cat that would take
periodic pictures (elsewhere in the site he tells how he deisigned it).

It is utterly fascinating to me the pictures this cat 'took' over several days.
There are things a human being would probably never see.

Check it out. The camera listed looks very groovy too..........$20 with a 1.3 megapixel resolution
manual focus and the ability to take webcam pictures but fits in your hand. I'll order mine tomorrow.

LET'S CHECK IN: what are you shooting or planning to shoot this week

This tribe used to be very active and has really slowed to a crawl.
I actually began to shoot toy video and toy digital because I stumbled on it
and now I'm really active with toy webcam and toy video animations of my
abstract electronica tunes.

So, what's everybody up to these days?

I, myself, know of a small leaveless tree with short branches in a parking lot
in Watsonville where a whole host of Crows hang out. They look incredibly stark
against the leaveless tree branches and, in particularly, against a dark rainy cloudy sky.

I'm hoping I get another free day with weather like that before the tree busts out with new
leaves (as it will soon). I want to drive there and take still shots and also do a
long, tripod held shot of from beneath the tree so that I can have a stark loop to play
against at the Boise Experimental Music Festival that I'm headlining in April.

I'm also planning on buying a bunch of relatively inexpensive black fabric and grommeting
it to three poles so that I can quickly turn my recording studio into a modest photographic
studio as well. I have a lot of UV lighting and toy lighting device ideas for videos for my
next CD.

That's it for me. I look forward to hearing what you are all up to.
Here's some of my work at www.youtube.com/looppool I did the music as well.

printing 120 film...help!

As a longtime Holga-lover, most of my shoots are on 120 film. All of my local photo shops that print 120 film are either out of business or discontinuing their processing labs. My membership at the local photography collective is expiring and I wasn't planning to renew because it is expensive and I don't use it often enough for it to be worth it. But I still shoot the occasional roll of 120 film.

Where do you get yours processed?

AIPTEK TOY MINI DV CAM

I just splurged and found a $30 (and an even smaller pen cam than the one Allan and I have been shooting
for an additional $10.............whoooopeeeee!)
AIPTEK MINI DV CAMCORDER that fits in the palm of your hand.

It also takes digital pictures and records audio with a USB connector computer use
AND the ability to project onto a regular television.

YOu can use a CFC card but I prefer to keep the video lengths to the bare minimum
(4 minutes or so)..............LESS IS MORE.

Anyway, I just posted my first picture I took with it during a drum lesson with a favorite student.
It really caught his energy, I thought.

Check out my Holga gallery of Burning Man at www.khafif.com/safadancer/gallery and go to the bottom. I also have some of the pics up in my profile. Fortunately, a Holga is well-suited to a bright, glaring, dusty desert environment: it handles contrasts well and it doesn't matter if it gets grit on the lens. :)

Worlds Largest Pinhole Camera and Resulting Photograph

IRVINE, Calif. - What is believed to be the world's largest photo was successfully created in a hangar that had been converted into a massive camera at the former El Toro Marine Corps base.

About 30 people showed up Wednesday to see the fuzzy, 28-by-108 foot black-and-white image taken by six photographers from the nonprofit Legacy Project. The photo, taken Saturday, shows the control towers, palm trees and a portable toilet.

The photo was created using the centuries-old principle of "camera obscura" after a gumball-size hole was opened in the hangar's wall, allowing a tiny beam of light to enter.

The image then appeared upside down and flipped left to right on a sheath of light-sensitive fabric the length of one-third of a football field and about three stories tall.

The cloth was exposed for 35 minutes. The photographers and 60 volunteers developed the image by moving the fabric into an enormous, 1-foot-deep tray.

"That was the magic: seeing this image come to life in the tray," photographer Jacques Garnier said. "That made all the work worthwhile."

The photo will be wrapped around a tube and eventually shipped to a temperature-controlled warehouse in Riverside. A few museums have expressed interest in displaying the photo, though no firm commitments have yet been made.

Guinness World Records has created two new categories for the project — world's largest camera and world's largest photograph. Certification of the records will take about three months.

The ambitious project was the latest by the group of shutterbugs who wanted to memorialize the Marine base before it was gone. The base was decommissioned in 1999 after more than a half-century of use.

Developers plan to build a 375-acre park, museum district, sports complex and thousands of homes on the base.
************************************************************

Unfortunately, there wasn't a photograph of the photograph at Yahoo where I found this article

OT: Toy Video Loops I Made

My terrible Radio Shack digital camera takes
even worse lo fi little 30 second videos................they are grainy and awful
and I'm really into this wierd phase right now.

I'm into holding the camera by hand (and NOT a tripod) and taking a picture of a very
static scene and holding the camera as long as I can.

When projected these little videos look really lo fi and look like a slide until
suddenly it dawns on people that the frame is jerking around really subtley.

I'm having so much fun with this technique that I also started taking pictures in my
darkened bathroom with little cheap battery operated toy lighting effects.
I"ve used them (with some simple Vegas Video effects) on three tracks for my next
multi-media DVD, ORANGE and one track from my recent performance at the Boise Experimental
Music Festival (where I also got some killer lo fi vid loops).

Anyone interested can download them in glorious full audio fidelity at
www.looppool.info/ORANGE/ or at YouTube.com under the name looppool.

I don't know if this is too off topic to include here but there appears not to be a TOY VIDEO CAMERA tribe yet.
Let me know if this is too horribly off topic, Alan and, if so, I won't post again here.

I just love this tribe, creatively and it has given me as much inspiration in my artistic life as all the electronic music and live looping tribes I"m in so I wanted to share it with you guys.

Also, I'd like to sell copies of my DVD later on this summer so please don't circulate this URL. It's just for my friends here/
Thanks everyone.

Holga-Schmolga (aka Lensbaby)

Why should I buy a cheap-assed toy camera when I can get the same effect on my expensive camera?!??!!!

http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews_lensbaby.php

'The Lensbaby is the brainchild of professional photographer Craig Strong, who invented the Lensbabies Flexible Lens Mounting System (to give it it's full name) in an effort to replace his Holga film camera with a digital equivalent. It is described on the Lensbaby website as "the hybrid love children of an old-fashioned bellows camera and an up-tight tilt-shift lens", producing photographs with " the same soft, roughed-up look produced by a Holga".'

Audio - Loving the Imperfections of Toy Cameras

Loving the Imperfections of Toy Cameras
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5020856

All Things Considered, November 20, 2005 · Thanks to digital technology, it's become progressively easier to take perfect pictures. But not everyone strives for perfection -- a growing community of photographers is becoming attached to the simplicity and imperfections of what they call "toy cameras."

These cameras, with names like Holga, the Diana-F and the Lomo Action Sampler, are cheaply made plastic devices.

There's even a new magazine devoted to the cameras, Light Leaks, which glorifies the biggest flaw of the toy camera: light often leaks through the plastic casing onto the film, creating odd halo effects and other moments of visual serendipity.

Photographer Theresa Manzanares describes why she loves her toy cameras.

My tribe blog has naturally morphed to primarily a photoblog over the course of the last few months. Wondering if some on this tribe use their blog in much the same way? Check mine out in my personal profile. And I would like to offer to be "friends" with others who use the tribe blog as a photoblog, so we can be aware of each others postings via our profile blog listings. Message me if you are interested.

I just added another cheap digital pic one or two late (can't seem to grab the URL right now...). SiPix Blink II, 640x480 (no flash, of course), digital. levels adjusted slightly. all distortion, blurring "native" to the well-crafted lens included with the device.

Hi All,

I've recently started shooting polaroids again and I'm interested in exhibiting some or more of these images.
If you know of a business or space that is looking to exhibit this type of work please pass this on them or let me know. I intent to print these up to 16x20 and mount them on masonite board.

Enjoy and let me know what you think,

of course, I don't exactly have the delivery system.

"It’s called the Firefly, and it’s made by Rafael Land Systems. It can be launched up to 600m from an M16’s underslung grenade launcher, by any non specially-trained soldiers. The “ballistic camera” will then lob in the air, all the while taking video and transmitting back to ground operators’ PDAs.

Once it reaches the ground, it, well it smashes up. "

Do cheap-o polaroid cameras count as "toy cameras"? I bought a Spirit for $3 this weekend, then gutted it and turned it into a pinhole camera. I'll post some pics later after I get new film if y'all are interested. There's a pic of the camera here: http://www.dronecolony.com/img/pola-spirit.jpg

I bought the Epson Perfection 4990 Photo. Granted, I'll use it for other stuff, but mainly I bought it for my medium format negs.

Quick question, does anyone here know of jandcphoto.com? I don't know anyone whose used them and was just wondering if they're a good place to get old style film.

Reticulating film

I've tried reticulating several times (with new film) -- used 120 degree developer and ice cold stop (literally, I had to melt the water I used to mix it with) and 120 degree fix, and so forth, and NOTHING HAPPENED. Anybody had any luck with reticulation?

I know it might be too much on top of the Holga effects, but I can't help thinking that some nice scaling or whatever would looke cool. But I can't get it to work!

120/220 online developers?

We're looking for cheap here... the Holga twins (one sharp, one dim, yet I love them both) are hungry, cranky, inconsistent little beasts. There's a great little lab I used to use a lot for 35mm at Wilshire and La Jolla in LA (Hour Image) that I can get $3.50 to develop (120) and $8 to burn a CD, which is the best I've found, but I feel like I can do better than a buck an image (without prints)... I use mpix.com for printing digital stuff but they don't seem to want medium format business.
Hmm.
My new thing is using 220 film in the Holga- just seal up the red window extra good (black paper tape inside and double gaff tape outside) and count the clicks well; there seems to be so much more expired 220 than 120 floating around these days... or is it just me?

does using a toy digital camera disqualify me?

I know this is probably to modern and hi tech, but
my wife bought me a radioshack toy digital camera for
a present.

it has horrible optics and comes with some really primitive
software that is really fun to mangle with.

I love it and as soon as I have my crashed 2nd C drive reinstalled I'll post a pic (unless there is an outcry against it.....lol).

That's my only cred for being here, except for the fact that I am spiritually tied to all of you because i have a huge collection of toy instruments that I use in my found/invented/toy instrument and live looping shows.

anyone intrigued by this can here some mp3s at my website:

I've been getting really into my Holga for the past 2 years now and my most recent work is up there. In addition to using a Holga I also manipulate the images. You can see the work also on my site:

I just made the CD art for my brand new Abstract Electronica
CD, Purple Hand by putting my hand on my scanner and then
dragging it as the white light rolled down the scanner.
I colorized it and added simple text and will post it here for your perusal.

I ask because I"ve been fascinated by xerox and scanner art for a long time and I just saw that the talented musician/photographer Amy Pie has a xerox scan of her face in her profile pics.

One start a little xerox/scanner art posting flurry?

That is an amazing and evocative picture.

If possible I'd love to use it as a CD cover for a future dark ambient project I'm going to put out.

Who took it and what do you think about such an audacious idea?

contact me off list at rickwalker@looppool.info if you are interested. I make all of my living off of my art and have very little money so it won't be a lucrative deal but it would be some
exposure for what that's worth.

Beautiful work, thanks for making my week better with your artistry.

I just pulled out my Holga and played around with a roll of film and the results were mixed. There were two images that were printable, the others were either over or under exposed. How do I work it so there is more consistency in the quality of the pictures? I'm using b/w 100 agfa and ilford films.

Living in Canada (Ontario), what with the extreme cold we've been having in January, I shoot almost no photography -- since I mostly shoot outdoors. And this is especially true with my toy / experimental cameras (Holga, hand-made pinhole, antique box). And I rarely even breakout the Nikon D70 when the temp is in the minus degrees.

Anybody else relate?

I'm trying to start a SF photography group...

I'm trying to see if I can generate some interest in starting a photography group that meets up once a month. I'm trying to create a small group of like minded individuals who are interested in sharing work, projects, getting feedback on work, support, help developing projects and really just establishing a group for portfolio development. I really don't have any stringent rule/idea about how this should form as I am looking for this to be a collaboration of all who are involved.

One of my really good friends from Santa Rosa wants to be a part of it, he knows someone in Oakland that is interested...Depending how large the group becomes I can offer my office as a meeting place - but I would have to limit the group to about 5 or so people (all the chairs I have), plus my office is kind of small....unless we can find somewhere else comfortable to meet.

Let me know if anyone is interested and any other areas I should try and post this.

cheers,
Mark

These beauties can be bought in truckloads at flea markets or on Ebay and each of them has its own personality. Anyone else her who shoots with them?

digital toy camera

Hey everybody,
I just posted yesterday to the digital camera tribe about this nifty little digital camera I got from QVC. The vingnetting is what reminded me about the similarities to my beloved Holgas. This thing only takes 20 photos but the color saturation is incredible and exaggerated. And it's about half the size of a pager. The photos are low res at 72 dpi and around 4 x 5.
I would guess that this is mainly a film forum, but I just wanted to let everybody know what's out there. I remember a while back , there was a child's camera that was selling for a lot of cash on ebay because it had a digitized very pixelated instant fax paper type print capability. Maybe 5 years ago?
Can anybody tell me how to upload photos to a post? Then I can show what some of these pics look like. I only see two buttons on the typing screen right now.
Mike

Kodak duaflex II

So I just found and dusted out my old (1950-60s era) Kodak Duaflex II . I found this camera at my grandparents place and brought it home a couple years ago with the intention of taking some shots with it to see what happens.

I just read a primer on the camera on the web and I'm headed out to the camera store to see if I can modify some rolls of 120 to fit into this thing. It takes 620 film which is basically the same as 120 film except the spool is maybe 2mm shorter, the film is the same size....good old kodak trying to boost camera and film sales....

I'm gonna shoot a roll of color and some c-41 process b&w this evening and since I can do unlimited 1/30 exposures maybe a little night photography. i expect I'm gonna have to do some further disassembly to suck 40 or 50 years worth of dust out of the optics.

But well see what happens.

Some stats:
6x6
f/8, f/11, f/16 apeture holes
72 mm 3.5ft-Infinity guess focus lense
Optional flash (which I dont have but I do have my nikon speedflash)

hi everyone!
i am thinking about buying a holga but wanted to know how y'all feel about them. i love to take pictures but do not fancy myself a photographer at all- is a holga suitable for a beginer? any other suggestions in the same price range? also, how much does it cost to get the film developed?
thanks in advance! -summer

Can we alphabetize our Members list, Allan?

I went looking for
Shockwave (never did find him/her)
in the members list and was chagrined to
learn that our names aren't alphabetized
in the listing.

Since we are already 149 strong and growing, it would
be really cool to be able to find photographers quickly.

Is this possible, Allan?

Can anyone admit to being Shockwave or put me in touch with
him/her...............if that subway shot isn't an
electronica CD cover............I don't know what would be.

I know they are not strictly toys, but I am interested in gettin' a Polaroid camera. i don't know anything about 'em, though.

Anybody know which camera would be a good start? Maybe a camera which is a little unpredictable or toy-like, but with film and batteries that are pretty easy to get.

ok, I really feel silly. I cannot get my holga to work the way I want to. I finally have been brave enough to pick it up again and I got a lot of overexposed shots. I learned not to shoot in the bright sunlight, but are there other things I can do?

Grr! I was out shooting all day today with my Smena Symbol and it freakin horked the entire roll of film. When I went to rewind it the film began this not-so-nifty accordion action and piled up inside. This is the second time this has happened to me, first was with my LC-A. I'm beginning to think that it's that damned free Lomo film they sent me that's the problem. Anyone else have similar probs with Lomo film?

Hoi. I'm looking for any recommendations you may have on cheap/less expensive films to use. I'm just getting started with this toycam joyfulness and as such don't want to spend a fortune on film (does anyone? ever?). I've heard about Lucky film but am having one hell of a time finding it. I live in the Pacific Northwest if that's useful info to anyone.

I probably will clean out the $.99 store soon but you never know what you get with that.

I have quite a few "disposable" cameras that actually have winding cranks on them so that they could easily be reloaded with film by almost anyone. I even acquired a disposable underwater camera with a latch lever on the waterproofing case that has allowed me to re-use the camera over and over again without water leakage. Would these cameras fall into the toy camera catagory? I just want to make sure because I don't want to be accused of cheating!

I have seen these cameras on ebay for a while now from different sellers. The average price is $20.00. If it takes pictures as good as the high dollar SLR cameras then I would say these are well more than worth that price. Does anyone know anything about these particular cameras that would define it's worthiness...or should I just stick with my Pentax?
